DR. S.M Yusuf (RIP June 18, 2014)

Dr. S.M Yusuf was a mathematician, a Ex Dean of sciences and head of mathematics department at Quaid-e-Azam University (Pakistan). He achieved his PHD from the University of Tennessee in an era when Pakistan could boast about only a handful of PHDs. His life is a representation of dedication, hard work, ambition and success. He leaves behind him his legacy as the first Pakistani author of mathematical sciences. To date his name graces the mathematical books deployed in the syllabus of various professional qualifications and academic degrees.

Belonging from a very humble family and having lost his father at an early age he had to leave home at a young and nimble age to pursue his ambitions. Through his dedication to succeed he climbed up the academic ladder, winning scholarships and awards, until he reached the very top of his profession. He continued to enlighten the youth with his knowledge till very late in his age. While most Universities were desperate for his association he had to give up, reasoning with his ability to deliver adequately for the students due to old age. He never wanted to accept a position where he would not be required to do what he loved the most, i.e. to teach.

To many he was an author and professor of mathematics, but for me he was a Father, a teacher and inspiration. He never posed himself upon his children as the highest achiever but as a minimum threshold we had to achieve. Our success made him proud, but above that it was him who made us proud. From school to profession I encountered teachers, co-workers and business men who knew and respected him. His reputation won us respect and recognition. His departure on this day of 18^th June, 2014, is indeed difficult for me and the rest of his family to bear but we know in our hearts that he now resides in a much better place and in a much better state.

With the feeling of exceptional pride of being a part of his family I’ll thank Dr. S.M Yusuf for his contributions towards his family and the Country.

May Allah Rest His Soul in Peace and grant him place in Janat ul Firdous.
